Arab Revolt in Palestine, 1936–1939

The revolt began in 1936 with strikes, protests and attacks following years of political deadlock under the British Mandate. A six-month general strike was followed by a wider rural insurgency directed against British authority and the expanding Zionist settlement project.

Britain deployed large military forces, collective punishments, detention, demolitions and executions to suppress the uprising, while internal factional violence also weakened Palestinian society. By 1939 much of the Palestinian political and military leadership had been killed, imprisoned or driven into exile.

The revolt is a major historical movement within Time of White Horses, where the struggle reaches into the village of Hadiya and the Khaled family. This context supports fiction about guerrilla warfare, colonial policing, imprisonment, land conflict and the social cost of rebellion.
