Late Roman Provence and the Collapse of Gaul

During the later fifth century, Roman government in Gaul lost the military and fiscal power needed to defend its territories. Provence and the Rhône valley stood between competing imperial commanders and the expanding Visigothic and Burgundian kingdoms.

Local aristocrats and bishops tried to preserve law, education, estates and church organisation even as allegiance shifted between rulers. Roman identity therefore survived beyond the effective reach of the western emperors, but increasingly depended on accommodation with successor powers.
