Pauline Mission in Philippi

Philippi was a Roman colony in Macedonia whose civic identity was strongly connected to Roman law, military settlement and public religion. Acts presents Paul and his companions establishing a community there after meeting worshippers beside a river.

Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, offers hospitality after accepting Paul’s message. A separate episode concerns an enslaved girl whose owners profit from her divination; when Paul ends the practice, the loss of income leads to arrest, beating and imprisonment.

The Woman from Lydia expands these brief episodes through fictional characters and a rescue journey. Its historical setting highlights how early Christian claims about freedom and worship challenged households whose wealth depended on enslavement and spiritual exploitation.
