770–476 BCE
The Spring and Autumn period was an age of competing Zhou states, aristocratic warfare and major political change from 770 to 476 BCE. The authority of the Zhou kings weakened while regional rulers increasingly acted independently, forming shifting alliances and competing for prestige and territory.
The period also saw important changes in military organisation, administration and social hierarchy. Confucius lived during its later decades, and later Chinese historians looked back on the era as a formative stage in the political and intellectual developments that intensified during the Warring States period.
