Women Photographers in the Upper Midwest, 1900–1915

Portrait studios depended on glass plates, darkrooms, retouching and explosive flash powders. Mercury and other chemicals could cause serious illness, while business owners travelled or hired assistants to keep studios operating.

Women entered photography as assistants, retouchers and proprietors, developing artistic authority in a profession still publicly associated with men. Their work could provide unusual economic independence.
