Willapa Bay Settlement, 1853–1863

A scouting party connected with Wilhelm Keil’s Bethel community travelled to the Pacific Northwest and selected land near Willapa Bay in what became Washington Territory. The remote coastal environment demanded clearing, building and subsistence work.

Keil ultimately preferred a location in Oregon, and the settlement did not become the community its scouts had expected. Families who remained or became separated from the main colony faced isolation and weak legal protection.

A Clearing in the Wild and A Tendering in the Storm place Emma Giesy’s family within this unstable experiment, where private grief and communal conflict are intensified by geographic isolation.
