Women’s Oregon Trail Migration, 1852

Thousands travelled west in 1852 during one of the Oregon Trail’s largest migration seasons. Cholera and other illness killed emigrants rapidly, leaving surviving families to continue with reduced labour and protection.

Women cooked, drove teams, nursed the sick, buried relatives and sometimes managed wagons after husbands or adult sons died. Their work was essential even when emigrant narratives treated male decision-making as the central story.

All Together in One Place draws on an account of women returning after the men of a wagon group had died, transforming the incident into a study of cooperation, faith and female survival.
