Oregon Country Provisional Government, 1843–1849

Settlers in the Willamette Valley debated courts, land claims and collective authority while Britain and the United States still disputed sovereignty over the wider Oregon Country.

The provisional government developed through close votes and compromise among American migrants, French Canadian Catholics and former fur-trade families. Its expansion did not represent Indigenous communities whose lands were being occupied.
