Deschutes River and Central Oregon Settlement, 1850–1900

The Deschutes River region became a corridor for migration, ranching and trade as settler families established farms and small communities east of the Cascades. River crossings and isolated homesteads made travel and communication difficult.

Settlement changed land use and intensified conflict over water, grazing and Indigenous homelands. Families often depended on extended kin and neighbours to survive illness, accident and economic uncertainty.
