Coos Bay and Oregon Coast Development, 1870–1918

Coos Bay’s ports and forests attracted entrepreneurs who invested in mills, shipping, rail links and town development. Wealth could produce substantial civic projects while remaining dependent on dangerous labour and Indigenous dispossession.

Prominent households became symbols of regional progress, but economic influence did not prevent marital scandal, family conflict or social isolation. The coastal environment magnified both ambition and vulnerability.

A Gathering of Finches reconstructs one such household to examine money, forgiveness and the consequences of choices hidden behind public prestige.
