Paiute Displacement and the Oregon Reservation Era, 1850–1880

Northern Paiute communities faced growing settler traffic, livestock pressure and military campaigns across Oregon and the Great Basin. Violence and hunger accompanied the disruption of seasonal movement and access to traditional resources.

Federal policy attempted to confine Indigenous peoples to reservations while missions and schools promoted cultural assimilation. Children and adults who crossed community boundaries could experience profound uncertainty about language, kinship and belonging.

Love to Water My Soul uses these pressures in the story of a child raised among Paiute people and later forced into settler society, emphasising the emotional damage of displacement.
