War
1899–1913 CE
The Moro Rebellion developed after the United States took control of the Philippines following the Spanish-American War. In Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, American military government encountered resistance from Muslim Moro communities whose political structures and local autonomy did not fit easily within the new colonial order.
Fighting continued in varying forms from 1899 to 1913 and included punitive expeditions, sieges and assaults on fortified mountain positions. The conflict exposed the violence of American colonial expansion and included the 1906 attack on Bud Dajo, where large numbers of Moro men, women and children were killed.
