Whitman Mission and Oregon Country
1836–1847
The Whitman Mission operated among the Cayuse in Oregon Country and became entangled with migration, disease and cultural conflict before the killings of 1847. Much of its history turns on preaching, conversion, dissent, institutional change and community formation.
In historical fiction, faith, conscience, social reform and conflicts over religious authority through the lives of people affected by wider change can come to the foreground.
