First Transcontinental Telegraph

1861

In 1861 telegraph crews pushed wire and poles across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain routes to complete a continuous electrical link between the eastern United States and California.

The project required crews to work through remote country exposed to weather, fire, supply problems and conflict. Its completion dramatically shortened communication times and helped make the Pony Express obsolete.
