Reconstruction in Georgia

After the Civil War, emancipation ended the legal ownership of people but did not provide formerly enslaved families with secure land or equal protection. Freedpeople built schools, churches, households and political organisations while negotiating labour contracts and searching for relatives separated by slavery.

Georgia moved through presidential and congressional Reconstruction, military oversight and readmission to the Union. Black men won office and participated in constitutional reform, but white supremacist violence, discriminatory laws and economic coercion restricted the freedom promised by emancipation.

Much of Gone with the Wind takes place during this period, although its portrayal reflects Lost Cause interpretations rather than reliable Reconstruction history.
