Nathanael Greene’s Southern Campaign

George Washington appointed Nathanael Greene to command the Southern Department after severe American defeats. Greene divided his army, coordinated with militia commanders and forced British troops to pursue him across difficult terrain.

Although several battles were tactical British victories, losses at places such as Guilford Courthouse were costly and helped drive British forces toward Virginia. The campaign restored American mobility and weakened royal authority in the interior.

The Family Greene combines this military history with a fictionalised family secret. Its focus is therefore both the public reputation of a revolutionary general and the private uncertainty experienced by Catharine Greene and her children.
