Battle of Atlanta
22 July 1864
On 22 July 1864, Confederate general John Bell Hood launched a major attack against William Tecumseh Sherman’s armies east of Atlanta. The fighting developed around the railroads and defensive lines outside the city as Confederate forces attempted to strike the Union flank and rear.
The Union line held, although Army of the Tennessee commander James B. McPherson was killed during the battle. The failed assault weakened Hood’s ability to stop Sherman’s campaign, and Atlanta was evacuated in early September after further manoeuvring severed the city’s remaining rail connections.
