Congo Free State, 1885–1908

The Congo Free State was established in 1885 as the personal possession of Leopold II of Belgium rather than as an ordinary Belgian colony. Its administration claimed humanitarian and commercial purposes while building stations, river transport and armed authority across the Congo basin.

Ivory and, increasingly, wild rubber became the basis of an extractive economy enforced through taxation, hostage-taking, forced labour and the Force Publique. Reports by missionaries, officials and campaigners exposed widespread killing, mutilation, displacement and famine.
