Modern Nigerian History

Modern Nigerian History follows the political and social transformation of the region that became Nigeria, from nineteenth-century states and trading networks through British conquest, amalgamation, independence and the postcolonial era.

The period includes the expansion of Christian missions and colonial administration, the creation of the Nigerian federation, nationalist politics, the First Republic, military coups, the Biafran war, oil-led economic change and repeated struggles over federal power.

This parent is intended as a national gateway beneath Modern African History. Books should normally link to one of its more specific colonial, republican, military or wartime children whenever the setting can be identified.
