The Plains of Passage

Ayla and Jondalar leave the Mamutoi and begin the long journey west towards Jondalar’s home. Travelling with their horses and a wolf, they cross rivers, grasslands, mountains and territories occupied by many different peoples. Their animals and unfamiliar techniques attract curiosity, suspicion and hostility, while natural hazards and violent encounters repeatedly threaten the journey.

The novel broadens the series into a survey of Ice Age Europe, showing communities linked by migration, trade, ritual and shared knowledge despite differences in language and custom. Ayla’s healing skills and Jondalar’s experience as a traveller help them negotiate these encounters as they follow the great river routes towards the Zelandonii.
