Epictetus was a Stoic philosopher whose teachings survive through the notes of his pupil Arrian.
Epictetus was born enslaved, later gained freedom and became one of the most influential Stoic teachers of the Roman imperial period. His Discourses and Enchiridion focus on moral discipline, control of judgement and freedom under external constraint.
He belongs in Classical for pages on Stoicism, Roman philosophy, slavery, ethics and self-command. His work is especially useful where ancient texts are used to frame endurance, duty and inward freedom.
