Saturninus Crisis

Lucius Appuleius Saturninus used the tribunate to promote grain measures, colonial settlements and land for veterans, working with Gaius Marius and Gaius Servilius Glaucia. Opposition from senators and political rivals turned elections and public meetings into contests backed by organised force.

After violence surrounding the elections of 100 BC, the Senate issued its emergency decree and required Marius, then consul, to restore order. Saturninus and Glaucia were captured after taking refuge on the Capitoline and were killed by a hostile crowd despite having surrendered.

Bodies in the Tiber places Quintus Sertorius amid the alliance’s collapse and Marius’s decision to act against former supporters. The crisis is useful for fiction about veterans’ politics, manipulated elections, urban violence and the repeated failure of republican institutions to contain disputes without bloodshed.
