Britannia

The Britannia novels follow four Roman soldiers and the people around them as imperial authority in Britain begins to fracture during the late fourth century. Starting with the Great Conspiracy of 367, Justinus, Paternus, Leocadius and Vitalis are drawn from frontier service into invasions, military revolt and political struggles that expose how dependent Roman Britain has become on an increasingly unstable imperial system.

The sequence moves from the assault on Hadrian’s Wall through the usurpation of Magnus Maximus and towards the final withdrawal of effective Roman rule. Rather than treating the end of Roman Britain as a single event, the novels emphasise the cumulative effects of military shortages, rival emperors, local ambition and repeated attacks. World of Britannia accompanies the trilogy with a non-fiction account of the historical and archaeological background to this transformation.
