Vera Atkins

Vera Atkins was born Vera Maria Rosenberg in Galați, Romania, in 1908 and later became a British intelligence officer. During the Second World War she worked in the French Section of the Special Operations Executive, where she helped prepare agents for missions in occupied France, checked the personal details needed to sustain their cover stories and accompanied many of them to their departure airfields.

After the liberation of Europe, Atkins took a leading role in establishing what had happened to F Section agents who had failed to return. Her investigations followed records, witnesses and concentration-camp evidence across Europe and helped identify the fate of many missing agents. Her wartime and post-war intelligence work was later recognised with British and French honours.

In Clare Harvey’s The English Agent, Vera Atkins is fictionalised as the London-based F Section handler whose work is tied to the agent codenamed Yvette. The novel uses Atkins’s documented SOE role as its historical foundation while inventing private pressures, relationships and incidents for the purposes of the story.
