The Treasure & Vengeance books form Farnol’s pirate cycle. In story chronology Adam Penfeather begins with the later-published prequel Adam Penfeather, which explains the early exploits that made him a hard and resourceful buccaneer. Black Bartlemy’s Treasure then introduces Martin Conisby, escaped from Spanish galley slavery and obsessed with revenge, before Martin Conisby’s Vengeance carries that obsession toward its final reckoning.

The sequence moves through the Spanish Main, treasure ships, pirate crews, captivity and isolated islands, but its central subject is the damage done by revenge. Adam learns survival through calculation, whereas Martin repeatedly risks survival because grievance has become his identity. Romance and friendship gradually compete with vengeance, giving the swashbuckling adventure an ethical progression as well as a chronological one.
