Kit Carson

Kit Carson was an American frontiersman, trapper, guide, army officer and Indian agent whose career became closely identified with the nineteenth-century expansion of the United States across the West. He worked in the Rocky Mountain fur trade, guided expeditions associated with John C. Frémont and later served in military campaigns in New Mexico and during the American Civil War.

Carson participated in exploration, military campaigns and overland travel across the Southwest and Rocky Mountain West. Kit Carson was born in Madison County, Kentucky and died in Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory.

Zane Grey’s Fighting Caravans places Kit Carson among the famous western figures associated with its Santa Fe Trail setting. His presence helps connect the fictional wagon-train adventure to the trail’s popular frontier mythology, although Grey’s treatment belongs to romantic western fiction rather than a reliable reconstruction of Carson’s life or of trail history.
