His choice becomes more dangerous as competing criminals, lawmen and personal attachments close around him. The novel turns the familiar outlaw story into a conflict of inheritance: Mike must decide whether the organisation that functioned as his family deserves his allegiance, or whether breaking from it is the only way to claim an identity of his own.
