The Proving Trail

by Louis L’Amour

First published 1979

2.5(5)

A young man’s family is shattered by violence, leaving him with little except the determination to understand what happened and decide what justice should mean. His search carries him onto a dangerous western trail where strangers may be allies, witnesses or threats, and where anger can become as hazardous as the men he is pursuing.

The story is less concerned with an easy revenge than with the choices made after loss. As the trail lengthens, the young survivor has to judge when to trust, when to fight and when vengeance would merely repeat the destruction that sent him west. The frontier setting makes those decisions immediate, because law is distant and a mistake can be final.
