A Texas cattle outfit drives north during the great cattle-trail era and reaches a town already inflamed by the killing of a respected cattleman. The drovers discover that hostility towards trail herds and the men who move them is mixed with personal grudges, prejudice and a local struggle over who is entitled to enforce the law.

What began as a commercial journey becomes a confrontation in which the outfit must protect its cattle and its people without allowing the town's violence to dictate every decision. Distance from reliable authority leaves reputation and solidarity as important as formal legal rights. The novel uses the cattle drive to show how trail crews could become temporary communities of their own, forced to defend themselves when economic rivalry turns into organised intimidation.
