Hopalong Cassidy enters the Box T country after stolen gold, murder and disputed land claims create a mystery in which several factions appear to be pursuing the same hidden prize. Rumour has made the supposed treasure more dangerous than its actual value, encouraging men to deceive allies and kill rivals before anyone knows exactly what is being sought.
Cassidy approaches the problem as both gunman and investigator. Tracks, ownership claims and the behaviour of the competing groups matter as much as open confrontation. To stop the killings he has to establish which stories are deliberate lies and which people have been manipulated into fighting over something they do not fully understand.
