Berenice Phernophorus

Berenice Phernophorus, also called Berenice Syra, was a daughter of Ptolemy II Philadelphus. She married the Seleucid king Antiochus II Theos as part of the settlement ending the Second Syrian War and moved to Antioch, where she bore a son who was intended to continue the new dynastic arrangement.

After Antiochus II returned to his first wife Laodice and died in 246 BCE, Berenice attempted to secure the throne for her child. Both mother and son were killed during the struggle. Her brother Ptolemy III Euergetes invaded the Seleucid Empire in response, turning the succession dispute into the Third Syrian War.
