Laodice I

Laodice I was an Anatolian noblewoman closely connected to the Seleucid royal house and the first wife of Antiochus II Theos. She was the mother of Seleucus II Callinicus and Antiochus Hierax. During a peace settlement with Ptolemaic Egypt, Antiochus set her aside and married the Ptolemaic princess Berenice Phernophorus.

Antiochus later returned to Laodice and died in 246 BCE. Ancient tradition accused her of arranging his poisoning and the murders of Berenice and her son, although the details are contested. What is clear is that Laodice supported the succession of her own son Seleucus II and remained politically active during the dynastic struggle that followed.
