Giovanni Battista Pamphilj was elected Pope Innocent X in 1644 after a conclave shaped by the rivalries that followed the death of Urban VIII. His accession weakened the position of the Barberini family and elevated the Pamphilj household within Roman politics.
Innocent’s pontificate combined church government, diplomacy and the management of the Papal States with the patronage expected of a Roman pope. His sister-in-law Olimpia Maidalchini became one of the most visible figures around the papal household. Their association attracted both genuine political attention and a large body of hostile contemporary gossip.
