Józef Piłsudski

1867–1935

Józef Piłsudski was a Polish independence activist and military leader who became chief of state after Poland regained independence in 1918. During the Polish–Soviet War he directed strategy at the highest level and played the leading role in the counter-offensive that defeated Soviet forces before Warsaw in August 1920.

Piłsudski remained one of the dominant figures of interwar Poland and later returned to power through the May Coup of 1926. Adam Zamoyski’s Warsaw 1920 examines his leadership during the campaign as part of a nonfiction military and political history.
