Ho Chi Minh

1890–1969

Ho Chi Minh was a Vietnamese revolutionary who became the leading symbol of the struggle against French colonial rule and later the president of North Vietnam. He helped found the Indochinese Communist Party and the Viet Minh, proclaimed Vietnamese independence in 1945 and led the Democratic Republic of Vietnam through the First Indochina War.

Ho Chi Minh was the Vietnamese revolutionary and communist leader who became president of North Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh was born in French Indochina and died in Hanoi, North Vietnam.

Sir Max Hastings’s Vietnam follows Ho Chi Minh from the anti-colonial struggle against France through the creation of North Vietnam and the wars that culminated in communist victory in 1975. Hastings places Ho among the political leaders whose decisions shaped the conflict while deliberately balancing high strategy with the experiences of Vietnamese civilians and soldiers on all sides. The result situates Ho’s revolutionary leadership within a broader catastrophe that cannot be reduced to the later American war alone.
