Guy Burgess
1911–1963
Guy Francis de Moncy Burgess was a British broadcaster, intelligence worker and Foreign Office official who secretly supplied information to Soviet intelligence. Radicalised at Cambridge in the 1930s, he moved through influential journalistic, diplomatic and government circles while passing classified material to his handlers.
In 1951 Burgess fled Britain with Donald Maclean and settled in the Soviet Union, where he died in 1963. Antonia Senior’s Stalin’s Apostles examines Burgess as one of the Cambridge Five and places his espionage within Stalin’s wider strategic aims. The book is nonfiction and the record reflects documented biography rather than fictional reconstruction.
