Alexander Scotland

Alexander Paterson Scotland was a British Army officer with long experience of intelligence and interrogation. During the Second World War he became commandant of the London Cage in Kensington Palace Gardens, a secret interrogation centre used for German prisoners whose questioning was considered especially important.

After the war the Cage was used in the investigation of suspected war criminals, and controversy later surrounded allegations about coercive interrogation methods. Helen Fry’s The London Cage reconstructs Scotland’s role from surviving records and the uncensored material behind his memoirs. The account is nonfiction and distinguishes archival evidence from later claims and official denials.
