Historical person
Mohammad Hatta
1902–1980
Mohammad Hatta was an Indonesian nationalist politician and economist who became a leading advocate of independence from Dutch colonial rule. He worked closely with Sukarno despite important political differences and, after Japan’s surrender, joined him in proclaiming Indonesian independence on 17 August 1945.
Hatta became vice president of the Republic of Indonesia and played a major role in diplomacy during the Indonesian National Revolution. Negotiations with the Netherlands and international pressure eventually produced the transfer of sovereignty in 1949.
Phil Craig’s 1945 follows the collapse of Japanese rule in Southeast Asia into the political vacuum from which Indonesian independence emerged. Mohammad Hatta appears alongside Sukarno as one of the leaders who proclaimed independence in August 1945 and then faced the attempt by the returning Dutch colonial power, assisted by British forces, to restore the pre-war imperial order.
