Switzerland in World War II

1939–1945

Switzerland entered the Second World War committed to armed neutrality and mobilised its forces as conflict spread across Europe. After the fall of France in 1940 the country was largely surrounded by Axis-controlled or Axis-aligned territory, making its economic and strategic position exceptionally difficult. Swiss leaders sought to deter invasion while maintaining trade and communications needed for national survival.

Neutrality did not remove Switzerland from the war. Allied and Axis intelligence services operated there, refugees crossed or were refused at its borders, and Swiss industry and finance were entangled with wartime commerce. The country also became a channel for diplomacy, information and clandestine contacts between states that could no longer communicate openly.

This context is useful for historical fiction and nonfiction focused on wartime Switzerland as a neutral but heavily pressured space. David Boyle’s The Swiss Appointment uses that ambiguity for an espionage story involving British intelligence, encryption technology and industrial supply networks.
