Battle of Pea Ridge
7–8 March 1862
In March 1862, Confederate general Earl Van Dorn attempted to defeat Samuel Ryan Curtis’s Army of the Southwest and restore Confederate influence in Missouri. Van Dorn moved around the Union rear in northwestern Arkansas, bringing the armies into battle around Elkhorn Tavern and Pea Ridge.
Curtis reorganised his surprised army and counterattacked on 8 March, forcing the Confederates to withdraw. The victory helped secure Missouri for the Union and became one of the most important conventional battles fought west of the Mississippi River.
