Samuel Curtis
1805–1866
Samuel Ryan Curtis was an American soldier, engineer and politician who became a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In early 1862 he commanded the Army of the Southwest in Missouri and Arkansas, campaigning against Confederate forces seeking to regain control of Missouri.
At Pea Ridge on 7–8 March 1862, Curtis reorganised his army after Earl Van Dorn attempted to move around his rear and won a major Union victory. The result helped secure Missouri for the Union and established Curtis as one of the leading Federal commanders in the Trans-Mississippi Theater.
