The Battle of Aegospotami was fought in 405 BCE on the Hellespont during the final phase of the Peloponnesian War. The Spartan fleet under Lysander watched the Athenians from across the strait before striking when much of the Athenian force was dispersed ashore.
Almost the entire Athenian fleet was captured or destroyed. With the sea routes that supplied Athens no longer secure, the city was blockaded and surrendered in 404 BCE, ending its empire and bringing the long war with Sparta to a close.
