Baker Expedition to Equatoria

In 1869 the Khedive of Egypt appointed Sir Samuel White Baker to lead an expedition south along the Nile and establish Egyptian authority in Equatoria. The force faced difficult river navigation, disease, supply problems and resistance from interests tied to the regional slave trade.

Baker reached Gondokoro and governed the new province while attempting to build posts, regulate commerce and challenge slave-raiding networks. His mission lasted until 1873 and formed an important episode in nineteenth-century European and Egyptian intervention in the Upper Nile.
