Anglo-Persian War

The Anglo-Persian War began after Qajar Persian forces occupied Herat in 1856, challenging a settlement Britain regarded as important to the defence of India and the balance of power in Central Asia. British and East India Company forces mounted an expedition from India to the Persian Gulf.

Campaigns around Bushire, Khushab, Mohammerah and Ahvaz forced Persia to negotiate. The Treaty of Paris in 1857 ended the war, required Persian withdrawal from Herat and confirmed Afghanistan’s political separation from Persian control.
