Egypt, 1869. Jack Lark works unofficially for the British Consul-General in Cairo until an opportunity arises to join explorer Sir Samuel White Baker on an expedition south into the Sudan. Jack takes command of a small elite force protecting the river flotilla, but authority proves more complicated than the borrowed ranks and battlefield promotions of his earlier career.
Baker’s real expedition sought to establish Egyptian authority in Equatoria and suppress the slave trade along the Upper Nile. As the vessels push into a region shaped by commerce, violence and competing local powers, Jack must decide what service to his men requires when the political purpose of an expedition and the realities encountered on the ground begin to diverge.
