Patrick Brontë
1777–1861
Patrick Brontë was born in County Down and educated at Cambridge before entering the Church of England. In 1820 he became perpetual curate of Haworth in Yorkshire, where he raised his surviving children after the death of his wife Maria.
He encouraged reading and education within the household and remained closely involved with the lives of Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne. Earlier biographies often portrayed him as severe and eccentric, but later archival research has presented a more complex figure: politically engaged, intellectually curious and deeply affected by the repeated deaths within his family.
