Branwell Brontë
1817–1848
Patrick Branwell Brontë was the only son of Patrick Brontë and the brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. As a child he collaborated intensively in the Glass Town and Angria stories and later tried to establish himself as a portrait painter and writer.
His adult employment was unstable, including work as a tutor and railway clerk. Alcohol and opiate use accompanied a severe decline in his health during the 1840s, and he died in 1848. His reputation has often been dominated by his failures, though his writing and art were important elements of the Brontës’ shared creative life.
