Albert Henry Andrew Hervey
1814–1877
Albert Henry Andrew Hervey entered East India Company military service as a young man and joined the 40th Madras Native Infantry in the 1830s. His career in the Madras Army ultimately lasted more than four decades, and he reached the rank of major-general in 1874.
Hervey published a three-volume account of his early service in 1850 as Ten Years in India, or, The Life of a Young Officer. The memoir preserves detailed observations of military routine, travel, hunting, servants and Anglo-Indian social life during the decades before the uprising of 1857.
