Battle of Lissa

Captain William Hoste’s four British frigates met a larger Franco-Venetian squadron commanded by Bernard Dubourdieu near the island of Lissa. The British maintained a disciplined line and defeated the attack.

Dubourdieu was killed and several enemy ships were captured. The victory secured British influence in the central Adriatic and became one of the most celebrated frigate actions of the war.
