Jennie Pickett Parrish

Jane “Jennie” Lichtenthaler Pickett Parrish was a nineteenth-century Oregon healer and physician who pursued medical work at a time when formal professional opportunities for women were limited. She developed an interest in herbal and homeopathic remedies and, after the breakdown of her first marriage, continued to seek a path into medicine while supporting her family. Her life became associated with Salem and Portland and with the small but growing number of women who entered organised medical education in the Pacific Northwest during the 1870s.

Jennie later married the Methodist missionary and Oregon pioneer Josiah Lamberson Parrish and had two daughters with him. She attended the Willamette College of Medicine and received her medical degree in 1879; local heritage records identify her as among Oregon’s earliest women physicians and as the first woman medically educated in the state. She practised in Salem and Portland and maintained a particular interest in the health of women and children. Jennie died of cancer in August 1887. The surviving family papers and local records document the broad outline of her career, although details of her early life remain comparatively sparse.

Jane Kirkpatrick’s All She Left Behind is a biographical historical novel centred on Jennie’s life. It follows her from a difficult marriage and self-taught healing work through divorce, her relationship with the older widower Josiah Parrish and the pursuit of formal medical education in 1870s Oregon. The novel’s central milestones—Jennie’s healing interests, remarriage, medical training and work as a physician—derive from the historical record, while dialogue, interior life and the detailed reconstruction of family relationships are fictionalised from letters, newspapers and family material.
